2013-05-30 The Vampire Rabbit

The 'Vampire Rabbit' is a local name for the sculptured rabbit (or hare) that sits above the rear doorway of the ornate, Cathedral Buildings, Dean Street facing St Nicholas' churchyard. It was painted black in 2008 and has a manic expression, oversized, red, canine teeth and red claws. Its provenance and significance are unknown, but possibly an original feature of the building built in 1901. Quote from http://www.geograph.org.uk

It makes me think of the African Queen even though the only thing they have in common is the funnel:

But it nearly got capsized later:

2013-05-17 Aggression in Saltwell Park

This swan was determined that the Canada Geese were not going to share the lake. It drove this one out of the water and later it did the same with another pair and their chicks. The male of the pair finally squared up when the swan tried to attack the chicks:

This park outside St. Chad's Church was built on the site of houses on Hyydepark Street and Westminster Street after the houses had to be demolished after they started to subside due to mine working underneath.

2013-05-13 Gateshead Library

The first free public library in Gateshead opened in 1896 in Swiburne Street. The building still exists though it is now used as offices:

Here is some detail:

In 1925 a new library was completed on Prince Consort Road which was officially opened in 1926:

Almost as impressive as the original until you look at the extension added more recently:

2013-05-06 Bank Holiday Monday fun

Some people have fun on a Bank Holiday weekend and then...

This is Claremont Park (aka the Jews Park) on Bewick Road. The seat was firmly fixed to the ground so it was no accident that it was uprooted

Meanwhile in Saltwell Park somebody had been around tipping all the wheelie bins put out for yesterday's Race for Life:

The Parkie was going round righting the bins but nobody was picking up the rubbish:

But some were just out to enjoy themselves:
