About this time of year there is a gathering of horse and cart (some will object to term cart but it is near enough for me) owners gather at Low Fell and ride in convoy along Saltwell Road South and on to Dunston. I spotted these on the way to the meeting place:

2013-06-26 King Edward Bridge

The bridge was designed and engineered by Charles A. Harrison, the Chief Civil Engineer of the North Eastern Railway, and built by the Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company in Darlington. The bridge consists of four lattice steel spans resting on concrete piers. The total length of the bridge is 1,150 feet (350 m) and 112 ft (34 m) above high water mark.
The bridge was opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra on 10 July 1906. The total cost amounted to £500,000.

The Shipley Art Gallery only came to Gateshead because Newcastle rejected the original bequest. Shipley had left his huge art collection and £30,000 to build a home for it to Newcastle even though he was born in Gateshead and leased Saltwell Towers in the park for many years:
